The standard keys of a keyboard measures from 0.65 to 0.75 of an inch in size. The keys were made to fit the fingers of a person with a normal built. The keys were also spaced closely together, wedged enough to permit fluidity in typing. However, standard keyboards have limits; not all can benefit from it. For one, the near distance between keys can confuse Braille-dependent users and other disabled persons. Even children may have a hard time to type on the normally-sized keys of the keyboard. These people need keyboards with bigger keys or keyboard print to be able to type properly.

This is exactly what Key Connection, Fentex Industries, DataCal Enterprises and other similar companies have thought of when they introduced specialty keyboards. These are keyboards that are either made with larger than normal keys or with average sized keys that has large printing. The specialty keyboards can be customized as required by the user on a per order basis.

The specialty keyboards with larger than normal prints were designed for those people afflicted with macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is an age-related eye condition, which results to blindness in the central vision of a person. The prints on these specialty keywords are in bright colors set against a dark surface of the keys for easy reading.

On the other hand, there are also specialty keyboards that have keys larger than normal, with a surface size of about 1 inch. These keys also have a large print and are painted in either black or white. The colored keys are usually made for children and are available in an ABC or QWERTY layout. The white keys with black letterings, on the other hand, are specially made for the color-blind elderly. Keyboards with large keys have no numeric keypads on the right or its numeric keypad is provided separately. The large keys are specialized to provide convenience to children who are still learning how to read as well as to users suffering from gout and other joint disease problems.

Aside from macular degeneration and joint diseases, medical doctors usually advise the use of keyboards with large keys to patients suffering from diabetic retinopathy, cataracts and from old age. There have been instances when keyboards with large keys have been advised to obesity-stricken patients with extraordinarily fat fingers. The large surface of the keys will provide contact without the obese patient accidentally pressing the other keys.

Overall I think this is generally a good idea. I have had experiences with people in the past who have halted their natural process of typing by having to look down at the keys just to make sure their hand is positioned correctly. That said i’m surprised it’s taken this long really… What with accessibility been a hot buzz word now. :)

If you want to introduce computer to your child, you should begin by choosing larger keys on the keyboard, such as the space bar and return key. Get your child used to pressing the key, holding it down and tapping it.

The size factor is important. But I think it should not only be the concern. There seems to be less attention given to the ergonomic concept which has health bearing. We need both for productivity and health consideration.
