Startup isn’t the only thing you can speed up when programming your Windows XP, it is also possible to speed up the process of shutting it down besides just unplugging it (which I recommend NOT to do!). If you are on the go and are the kind that likes to make sure that your computer turns off in time and doesn’t get stuck on “Do you wish to save?” here’s a simple way you can speed up the shutdown time of your PC:
* Do not let XP clear your paging file when you shutdown. Just for security reasons you can have your PC clear some of your pagefiles (pagefile.sys) when you choose to shutdown. Mainly a paging file is used to store temporary data and those sorts but when you shutdown the files will stay on it still. At time people choose to clear the pagefiles because at times it may contain unecrypted passwords that people would like to get their sticky fingers on. But, if it’s more important that you turn off your computer quickly than security, it might pay your interests not to clear it, and that should speed up things a little bit. In order to shut down XP and not clear your Pagefile, run Registry Editor (click on Start then Run, then type into the box regedit ) and then go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
* Make sure that you switch the value of ClearPageFileAtShutdown to 0. Exit the Registry, and reboot your computer. Whenever you restart XP after that, the paging file will not be cleared, and you should enable you to shut down more quickly and speed up the time.
Note: Pay attention when changing the Registry; you can do a lot of damage in there. Don’t change or remove anything unless you know precisely what it is.
