Don’t you hate it when you are using your laptop and the area near your battery and the underside of the laptop gets hot? This is actually very discomforting for a lot of people, but new technology that’s in the works in the United States just may bring the right cure to fixing the problem of overheating laptops. In fact, it may provide an excellent solution for cooling down laptop’s computer chips even more then the plain old sink fans and also provides an excellent system for getting the job done.

So what’s all the talk about this new technology? They are actually small but efficient ion breezes that not only do a better job than regular cooling fans that are in current laptops and computers, but they actually cool laptops’ chips down more than 20 degrees cooler! These systems of ion breezes are actually smaller as well and fit right on the chips themselves.

If you’re wondering how they work, then the researchers at Purdue University may be able to tell you. The company Intel, along with Purdue University researchers, have already created a mock ion breeze system that uses small pieces of metal to perform the job. In order to understand the difference, though, between these ion breezes and regular computer cooling fans, one must understand how cooling fans work. Cooling fans are essentially called metal heat sinks. They use and maximize the space around the computer chip to allow the heat to dissipate over the face and surface area of the chip. However, as laptops are doing much more work than in earlier times the methods that are currently being used to cool them, along with other mini-computers like PDA devices will soon be not enough cooling power to get the job done the best and most efficient way possible.

On the other hand, this system of ion breezes includes two electrodes that are powered by an electric charge. Once the charge is felt by the electrodes then the whole system creates positively charged ions which float over the surface area of the chip to move around the molecules and air throughout the chip. So instead of using the surface area to the maximum as regular laptop cooling fans do, these electrodes maximize the use of their electric charge.

But while researchers at Purdue are hard at work at actually creating a prototype and real device that will actually perform the job of creating an ion breeze for laptops, other companies have already gotten into the industry of creating more efficient cooling fans and systems. For example, Apple has created a liquid cooling system, although the ion breeze would be much less expensive to manufacture and sell.

If the ion breeze technology does take shape, though, it could mean a laptop and handheld device revolution for the computer industry. Laptops could be made smaller as well as more efficient! Ion breezes are definitely the next major piece of technology to improve the computer and laptop industry!
