Many people feel constricted by their internet browser, because usually Internet Explorer is the only choice. Still other people install Firefox and still don’t feel satisfied. The third most used browser is Opera web browser. Just like Firefox, Opera is a tabbed browser but it does have its own advantages over Firefox. First, Opera has a built in Mail and Chat client. Opera mail is a part of the Opera browser, but it functions as an email client very effectively. It is very easy to add accounts to the mail client, and the settings are all very understandable and easy to configure. Another popular feature of Opera web browser is the availability of voice commands. Through the use of voice commands countless actions can be performed without even moving the mouse. For example, simply say “Opera check mail” and the Opera mail client will automatically connect to your specified mail server and check for new messages, if there are any new messages it will then display that information.

One favorite feature of Opera that Firefox does not have is the Speed Dial. When a new tab is opened Opera will automatically display either a page predetermined by you, or the Speed Dial. The Speed Dial has 9 boxes which can each be configured to load and display a website, to go to any of those websites all you have to do is click on the image. This is useful for websites that you visit often, and also for websites that you want to save but are more important than standard bookmarks. Another useful feature included in Opera is the included BitTorrent downloader. Simply click on any torrent link and Opera will automatically begin downloading the file(s) for you without the need of a separate torrent application. As with nearly all browsers, Opera has the ability to save your username and password for any site you wish. To login with a saved password simply click the wand next to the address bar, or press the key combination Ctrl+Enter.

Just like Firefox, Opera can easily be customized through the use of skins and widgets. Skins simply change the display of Opera, while widgets are very small applications that run alongside Opera to enhance Opera and your desktop. One thing Opera can do that Firefox cannot is the ability to save sessions. With Opera you can save a session of as many tabs as you wish, and then you can choose to reload all those same tabs with one click. This is very useful for when you have lots of tabs open but accidentally close Opera because you can also set Opera to automatically re-open to whatever was open when it closed. Overall Opera has some great features that are not available through Firefox and it is definitely worth giving Opera web browser a try!

There are many variable involved in the standard bit torrent client that may be considered technology that has been either built upon, or built in conjunction with. One such technology is the use of the trackers. These trackers can also be considered a very broad term as not only do you have the basic bit torrent tracker file, but you can also have a multi tracker which can give multiple locations to find new connections, as well as the DHT or hash key which can even farther connect you with many more clients.

The main way that the DHT works, is that it will allow your bit torrent client software to contact other known clients that have access to the same file that you are trying to access. The software then asks the other clients if they know of anyone else that is not listed on the tracker that may have that file this may actually go on through several different “handshakes” until another new client is found that may not be listed on the tracker.

Another important technology in the bit torrent network is how the actual content is delivered. When some one makes a new bit torrent file, they will then upload the .torrent file or as it is mainly called, the tracker file, to an indexing website that will allow you to search for the file you are looking for. On this indexing site, you will not find the file you are looking for, you will find the .torrent or tracker file that will allow your bit torrent client software to find the other clients that have pieces or the whole file.

This whole network has been able to fix the bandwidth usage for downloading of files, and getting rid of the need for the HTTP download protocol, even though many sites still use this form of downloading for the software that they are offering. Furthermore, the use of RSS feeds allow many sites to literally broadcast what the index sites have to offer, this allows for someone to go to one site and search multiple index sites all at the same time.

Another important technology that was built with the bit torrent in mind, is the encryption of the connection between your bit torrent client software with others. There are many reasons why this encryption has come into play, but the main reason is that many ISPs have realized how much of their bandwidth is used by the bit torrent clients and are trying to stop it. The various ISP services will actually scan all their connections in search of the bit torrent protocol, and when found, they will insert TCP RST packets into the data stream to stop the transmission. This has been termed throttling of the connection. Throttling is done by the ISP by imply corrupting your connection which forces the connection to drop.

Trackers

Posted In: File Sharing

When speaking about bit torrent networks, one of the most critical points of the entire file sharing network, is that of the tracker. Regardless as to the fact that the tracker file is utilizing a hash or an HTPP tracking method, the results are the same. The tracker does just that. It keeps track of every single computer that has a complete, or just a bit of any particular file so that other computers can connect to it in order to download it.

All bit torrent follows are required to have a tracker in order to initiate any of the downloads. And once again, once the downloads have already begun, the tracker is no longer actually needed.

When speaking about the tracker file, it does not necessarily a list the independent bits of the file, as it would with the BitTorrent client, in this case is the only maintains an index of the peers attached to the network. In either case, the use of bit torrent websites is very important to the entire peer-to-peer network, because not only do they offer a place for the tracker files to be stored, but they also offer a means of indexing the individual tracker files, so that one can search for the file that they are looking for.

There is also a new form of tracker, that is known as a private tracker. This particular form of a tracker is becoming popular among to corporate entities as a means to share files and other data between offices. This type of system is also utilized by certain that offer indexing services in exchange for a small fee, so that a particular file, although it may be found on other index sites, it would be capable of being downloaded faster due to the many users to pay for the service.

These private tracker is utilize a passkey that is required to be an intern in order to download the particular file.

Regardless of the type of tracker file, the biggest issue today with bit torrent clients, is that of distributing pirated material. There have been many cease-and-desist lawsuits over the past couple of years by the various copyright organizations around well. They target the index sites, that although they do not actually have or distribute the particular files in question, the ability to file a lawsuit against the many peers in the network is so overwhelming that they just go after the indexing services.

Too many innovations in the bit torrent protocol, the original concepts of the tracker have been improved. Initially the reliability of these particular trackers were in question due to the possibility of damaged torrent files, or due to the fact that some people purposely corrupted a particular piece of file so that when one uploads the file they may get a virus or unusable file.

One of the advances to help fight this corrupt data, is the use of multi-tracker torrents. In this case, a particular file may have multiple trackers, just in case one of the tracker files happens to fail or is unreachable.

File Sharing

Posted In: File Sharing

The concept of sharing files has been around since practically the beginning of the computer age. However, as time has gone by, the speed of Internet access, and the distance between persons wanting to share files has increased. To counter this measure, one was able to put a particular file on an FTP server so that someone else would be able to download it. Unfortunately, the biggest downfall of this, is the amount of bandwidth in which a server would utilize to allow someone to download various files. When attempting to share a file with a large audience of people, the average person cannot afford to maintain a server that will handle the bandwidth usage of multiple users and multiple files. From this need for increased file sharing capabilities, the peer-to-peer network was born.

Unfortunately, in the peer-to-peer networks were first released, they still utilized a server, much like the original HTTP, but it was much faster. It was in 2001, that a computer programmer had decided that enough was enough, and then released his very own version of a peer-to-peer network. This peer-to-peer network would become known as the BitTorrent.

With bit torrent, unlike most peer-to-peer applications, each individual client is the server. The application software connects all the various nodes together to create a full-mesh network. The reason for the use of the network style such as this, is plainly for redundancy. If your computer is on able to connect directly to another computer, your computer pushes a UDP request to another computer that is currently downloading the same file, so that the seed will actually connected to a computer instead. This process is known as pushing UDP.

The bit torrent network also allows a file to be replicated in short time. The more times any particular file is replicated, the faster is able to be downloaded, and therefore passed on to another computer. It was developed in such a fashion so that they would no longer be the issues revolving around a download that gets choked by too many downloaders at one time. Entire network is designed to be self-sustaining, assuming that each and every Seed file is maintained and available to the other computers on the network.

The bit torrent network, in a way, is its own self policing system. What is meant by this, is that if you were to be downloading 10 separate bit torn files at the same time at the maximum capabilities that your connection is capable of handling, while at the same time, you purposely set your upload speed to only have of your maximum capabilities, then the bit torrent network will punish you can slow down your download so that it equals out.

Likewise, a Seeder node on the network will only allow those with the highest capable of speeds to download directly from the Seed. The reason for this is to literally spread out the bit torrent file like a virus. The faster the various portions, or blocks, are downloaded from the seed, the faster or more seeds will become available.

Enjoy your use of the various bit torrent client applications software, and always remember to share with others.

The concept of downloading a BitTorrent file is a simple one. For the common user, they go to any one of the various search engines, type in the name of the file they are looking for, plus the word torrent, which results in a list of all the possible to BitTorrent files that they can download. From there, they can click on any one of the links, which will take them to a torrent search engine. These torrent search engines are also the servers on which the tracker files are stored at.

Assuming that you already have a big torrent downloader you simply click on download torrent, and the BitTorrent client will automatically start downloading the BitTorrent for you. The first thing that you will notice when you come one of these search engines, is that they show the heath of the file itself. Now been talking about the health of a BitTorrent file, what that means is the number of seats versus the number of lechers. The more seeds that are available, the less lechers, the healthier the file is.

You will also notice that each BitTorrent file is broken down into the independent files that can be found within the folder, once you download it. You may also notice that the comments written about the individual torrent files. These are important for anyone to read due to the fact that in the event a particular BitTorrent file has a virus in it, you will be able to learn right away by reading the comments section.

When you click to download any particular BitTorrent, which are really downloading is the tracker file. This tracker file has a .torrent suffix to it, which tells the individual BitTorrent program, that it is a map to the various nodes that have been created on the network for that particular torrent.

The client-side software automatically does the rest for you, including re-freshing the tracker file every couple of minutes, while at the same time, it also maintains a complete list of which computer and IP as which bits of the data. This is important as it helps speed up the download process, due to the fact that the BitTorrent software downloads multiple streams at the same exact moment. Some people can even see well over 50 connections at any given time, depending on which operating system is on their computer.

By maintaining a list of each and every individual node, as well as the parts that node has of the original BitTorrent file, you are able to download by what is known as rarest first. What this means is that in order to prevent a possible loss of the entire torrent file due to Seeders no longer Seeding that particular BitTorrent file, the rarest parts of that particular BitTorrent file are then downloaded first. This way, in the event that a Seeder file is lost, it is still possible to eventually download the entire BitTorrent file.
